Literacy

We are relentless in our pursuit of ensuring that all students leave Karrendi Primary School literate and confident in their ability to use language effectively.

Our approach to literacy is evidence based with a clear commitment to meeting the needs of every learner. We draw on practices that reflect current educational research into how children learn to read, write, speak, and comprehend effectively. These research-informed processes guide our teaching decisions, ensuring consistency, clarity, and high expectations across all classrooms.

Our youngest students engage in InitiaLit. InitiaLit is an evidence-based whole-class literacy program which provides all children with the essential core knowledge and strong foundations to become successful readers and writers. InitiaLit is a three-year program, covering the first three years of school (Reception to Year 2).

Building on the skills taught in our Junior Primary classes, children in Years 3 to Year 6 students engage in Spell Ex. SpellEx is a whole class spelling program, providing explicit instruction in spelling concepts, terminology, rules and conventions.

Regular progress monitoring enables our team to identify which students require additional support or need extending.

Literacy at our school equips children with the tools to think critically, express ideas clearly, and engage deeply with texts across all learning areas. By the time they leave our school, students are not only proficient in reading and writing, but are also empowered to use literacy as a foundation for lifelong learning, success, and active participation in their community.
